Background and Objectives : There are several known poor prognostic factors for sudden deafness such as age (<15, >40), delayed treatment (2weeks), profound hearing loss, PTA types, and vertigo. The purpose of this study was the analysis of intratympanic (IT) steroid injection for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) from a poor prognostic point of view.
Subjects and Methods : We conducted a retrospective study of 181 patients with SSNHL. 181 patients were divided into a study (36 patients, using systemic steroids and IT steroid injection) and a control (145 patients, using only systemic steroids) groups.
Results: The overall recovery rate of the study group was better than that of the control group, but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The recovery rate of the study group was better than that of the control group on poor prognostic factors. However there were no statistically significant findings, except profound hearing loss. We found correlation between number of poor prognostic factor and hearing gain response.
Conclusion: Intratympanic steroid injection was more effective treatment than only systemic steroid treatment. Specially patients has poor prognostic factors.
